The Supreme Court of Canada in R. v. Beaulac, [1999] 1 SCR 768 recognized that a person accused of a crime can have a trial in either official languages of Canada to which they have a sufficient connection to. We recommend that an accused person contact a bilingual lawyer quickly because an application to have a trial heard in English or French has to be made within a certain amount of time.
Our firm is able to provide a bilingual service to our criminal law clients in both official languages of Canada: English and French.

Legal support answers
Helpful legal questions
At Verdurmen Law, clients often ask about our legal scope, our team’s depth, and how we resolve cases for them.
Absolutely! Speaking to a lawyer in the beginning stages of an investigation against you can be very helpful because the lawyer will explain to you your rights and how you are able to exercise them.
A lawyer can review the disclosure and highlight defences which may be available to you. The disclosure is the police investigative material which you are entitled to review prior to your arraignment.
A lawyer will also be very useful with representing you at trial. It can be a daunting task trying to figure out the procedure and evidence rules by yourself. An experienced criminal defence lawyer will be able to assist you with making procedural choices and making appropriate arguments during the court proceedings.
Even if you decide to plead guilty, a lawyer’s work is incredibly valuable at the sentencing stage. A lawyer can have proper resolution discussions with the Crown Prosecutor in order to determine what pleas should be entered and what sentence the lawyers will ask the Judge to consider.
Even if the defence lawyer and the Crown Prosecutor are not in agreement with what is an appropriate sentence for you, your lawyer will research case law and precedents in order to support the sentence that your team will ask the judge to impose on you.
Our Testimonials
What people are saying about us
In June, 2023, I was charged with and later pleaded guilty to extortion related to my ex and our nasty break-up. When it came to the sentencing hearing in October, 2025, Glenn Verdurmen addressed the court with case law arguing for a sentence to be served in the community, including probation and a period of house arrest. The crown was seeking 18 months in prison and 18 months of probation. I had a previous criminal record. I was absolutely sure I was going to jail for some period of time, perhaps 6 months at the least. I made all the preparations to go to jail. Extortion is a very serious charge and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Had I gone to jail, I would have lost my job, home and most of my belongings. Due to Glenn’s excellent case law arguments, I was sentenced to 2 years of house arrest having to only spend the first 12 months in my home and I was still able to go to work. The outcome was far better than I expected. Now I will be able to continue re-building my life in the community and work towards being a better man without having to endure the nightmare of prison. I absolutely recommend you hire Glenn and his amazing team if you have run afoul of the law.
